how to check domain name availability

Do you want to know more about how to book your desired domain? If yes, you are in the right place. Here is a stepwise simple guide to check availability and register a domain name.

The first step towards creating a website is the registration of a domain name. In the present day, booking a domain name for your website has become a lot easier. This is mainly because there are a number of domain tools and generators available online that simplify the process of domain registration.

However, booking a domain name becomes tougher when the desired domain name is already taken. In this article, we will first cover the simple domain registration process and then address what you need to do if the domain name you are looking for is not available.

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is essentially an online address of a business or a website much like your home address in real estate.

There are two parts to a domain name. One is the top-level domain(T.L.D) and the other is the second-level domain. For more understanding, let us take, for example, our website address “99businessideas.com”.

Here .com part is the TLD and 99businessideas is the second-level domain and is mostly the address URL of any business or an individual.

It is without saying, selecting a catch and relatable domain name relevant to your business name plays a key role in building the brand growth and overall success of the project.

Here are the 7 Steps to Register a Domain Name

1. Choose a Domain Registrar

The first step towards registering a website domain name is to find a Domain Registrar. There are many domain registrars available like Namecheap and GoDaddy. Select the one that suits you best.

For selecting and registering a domain name, we highly recommend taking help from a reputed domain checker software or online platform. Our personal favorite is Namecheap.

2. Search for Domain Availability

The next step is to use the search tool of the domain registrar. Enter the name that you have decided on and check whether that is available or not. Use the registrar’s search tool to check if the domain name you want is available. If it is already available, try a  different name or choose a different domain extension like .com, .net, .org, etc.

This Namecheap domain-checking tool is very easy to use. Just enter your choice of any second level and press search. You will be immediately shifted to the results page of the website. If the domain name is available, you can directly book it online at the cheapest price.

3. Get the Domain Name

When you find the domain name you are searching for is available, select and add it to the cart.

4. Finish your Registration

To complete the registration process, follow the registrar’s instructions. You must enter your personal and payment information.

5. Verify Registration

After you’ve registered the domain name, you’ll need to verify ownership. The registrar will send you an email with instructions on how to verify ownership of the email address you used to register the domain name.

6. Configure your Domain Name

After you’ve verified ownership, you can change the settings for your domain. This includes establishing DNS records, email forwarding, and other configurations.

7. Begin Using Your Domain

Once everything is in place, you can begin using your domain. It can be used to create a website, set up email addresses, or for any other purpose.

To avoid losing your domain registration, remember to renew it before it expires.

What, if the domain name is not available?

However, if you are planning to buy an exact domain that has been already taken, there are two ways to get that domain name. One is to contact the current owner or wait till the domain name you are looking for expires.

It is also seen that there are people engaged in domain flipping business in possession of the said domain name. In that case, you need to contact them at negotiating a proper price and buy it.
